A coaching intervention is essentially a form of adult learning at the Executive Level. In the case of Executive Coaching, it is vital for the Executive Coach to have a goods sense of the key issues that will surround the executive, but also understand the way that the executive himself/herself make sense of the issues they are faced with. Understanding that the Executive Coaching assignment will assist in producing an enhanced outcome for the executive and the organisation. Although Executive Coaching focuses on increasing the executive’s knowledge or skill, it will also assist with the transformational thinking change in the executive, in other words, assisting the executive with the understanding his/her own underlying assumptions about the world of decision making.
In this process of Executive Coaching, the coach and the executive will, together, identify an underlying assumption, explore the implications of this assumption on the business, finding proof of that in the history of behaviour and then chart a new course of behavourial actions required.
From the point of view of a business owner, leaders and/or shareholders, the ultimate reason to run a coaching program, whether called Executive, Leadership or Business Coaching, is to improve business results. This means that the Business Coaching intervention must assist in increasing profits, reducing costs, or achieving both within a defined time frame. Business Coaching is fast becoming a growing “consulting “practice, because it promises to avoid the traditional pitfalls of personal and staff development programs from which neither the company or the executives gained much benefit.
Business Coaching can be approached from a number of different viewpoints, but to be successful, it must be strategic and individualised. A balance has to be struck between the business and the individual. In Business Coaching, the inclusion of business factors, as well as individual factors, is the key to achieving business results. The benefits of Business Coaching flow directly from its focus on achieving real business results, rather than trying to solve a specific problem with an individual or within a business. Business Coaching keeps the spotlight on effecting business results; other benefits are important but subordinate to achieving business benefits.
